Monday, January 23, 2006
BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Mike Trimboli (Norwalk, Conn.) of the University of Vermont was selected the America East Men’s Basketball Co-Rookie of the Week for the period ending January 22. The conference office made the announcement Monday.
It is the fifth time this season that Trimboli, who shares top rookie honors this week with Boston University’s Corey Hassan, has earned the weekly award. The freshman point guard joins former UVM greats Eddie Benton ’96, Tony Orciari ’01, T.J. Sorrentine ’05 and Taylor Coppenrath ’05 as Catamounts who have won the weekly honor at least five times.
Trimboli shot 53 percent from the floor and 75 percent from beyond the arc as the Catamounts split a pair of conference games. In a win over then-first-place Albany at Patrick Gym Wednesday, he scored a team-high 21 points, going 6-for-9 from the floor and 4-for-4 from 3-point range, while adding a game-high five assists. He also had a game-high 14 points at Boston University Sunday.
Trimboli leads the conference and ranks 11th in the nation in assists (6.5 per game). He also is fifth in the America East in scoring (15.2 ppg), fifth in free throw percentage (81.8 percent), third in 3-point shooting (40.7 percent) and fifth in 3-point field goals per game (2.06).
Vermont (8-9, 4-3 America East), tied for third place with Boston University, plays at league leader Binghamton (8-9, 5-1) Wednesday at 7 p.m. Television: NESN; Radio: WXZO 96.7 FM, WEAV 960 AM, WCVR 102.1 FM; Internet audio: www.sportsjuice.com; Internet video: www.americaeast.com.
